    I hope you don’t mind if I leave a comment here because I am not able to leave a comment over there at the Washington Post.

    It’s about society’s perception on how we see other people and identifying them. Society likes to put people in categories like man/woman, white/black, gay/straight, young/old, etc.

    Simply put it like this……

    If we stood on a public street and asked a random person to describe the next person they see, and that person happens to be Obama (but knowing nothing about him or his background). The first thing they would point out his skin color because that would be one of the categories that is basic, next of course his gender, and so on.

    I don’t think a lot of people would say “Oh he is half white half black”. No, no way he would be clearly be classified as African American.
